Derek J is from Toledo, Ohio where he graduated from cosmetology school He now resides in Atlanta, Georgia as owner of the JSpot Salon. Derek began his career as a stylist for major publications such as Black Men's Magazine, Today's Black Woman, Essence and Vibe. He is the winner of numerous hairstylist competitions including the prominent Bronner Brothers "Hair Battle Champion" award in 2007.
Derek J has appeared on television in "Hair Battle Spectacular" as one of the judges on the Oxygen reality hairstylist competition series, "Real Housewives of Atlanta." He was also featured in Chris Rock's documentary "Good Hair" and he has made guest appearances on "Oprah," "Ellen" and "Wendy Williams." He currently can be seen on Bravo’s Fashion Queens.
In spite of his celebrity status, Derek J is a humble, proficient haircutter at heart. He is a sought after educator appearing on main stage at New York ‘s International Beauty Show and at the MidWest Show main stage in Chicago. He is scheduled for classes this year with IBS in New York, and Las Vegas. He has also worked on stage at hair shows for numerous product companies.
